What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small metal screw that is inserted into the jawbone where a tooth once was. The implant serves as a replacement for the natural tooth root and is typically followed by a restoration such as a crown. The result is a tooth that looks and feels just like your original tooth.

Getting dental implants is an important decision, and it’s normal to have questions. As a Dentist Brantford locals trust, we are here to explain everything you need to know about the procedure, helping you make an informed choice.

I have nothing but good things to say about the tight crew at D.O.H. Everyone from the second I enter makes me feel comfortable. Just had a wisdom tooth pulled today, it's much less traumatic than I anticipated. The dentist and assistant were incredible. I didn't want to give five stars, I wanted to give seven. The front desk staff also deserves praise, seven stars as well. They have me laughing on the way in also when I'm leaving.

Dentists have always made me uncomfortable but the staff here try really hard to accommodate everyone. Him and all of the staff are wonderful caring people and I would suggest going to them to anyone in need! I'd give them 6 if i could! 💜💜💜

Why You Might Need Dental Implants

Your natural teeth are essential for maintaining the shape and height of your smile, as well as for allowing you to eat and speak comfortably.

A gap in your smile can lead to your remaining teeth drifting out of alignment. This misalignment increases your risk of oral health problems and can negatively affect both the appearance of your face and your overall quality of life. Even if you don’t notice these issues right away, there’s one problem you cannot avoid: bone resorption. This natural process occurs when your body breaks down non-essential bone tissue to repurpose minerals elsewhere.

When your teeth are in place, they stimulate the jawbone, promoting the production of new bone tissue. However, once a tooth is lost, that area of bone no longer serves a function and begins to dissolve away. This can lead to a shortened jaw, a receded chin, and a sunken appearance to your cheeks and lips.

Dental implants are the next best thing to natural teeth. By replacing missing teeth with Dental Implants in Brantford, Ontario, you can prevent or correct these issues, preserving both your oral health and facial aesthetics.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Losing a tooth can be distressing, but dental implants offer several important benefits:

  • 1. Restore Your Natural Appearance – Dental implants blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Custom-made to match your bite and tooth color, implants look just like real teeth.
  • Confidence and Comfort – Once placed, dental implants fuse with the jawbone, creating a stable, permanent solution that allows you to speak, eat, and smile with confidence. With proper care, your dental implants won’t shift or cause discomfort, unlike removable dentures.
  • Improve Bone Strength – Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss and maintaining facial structure. This is especially important for long-term oral health.

Dental Implant Restorations

After the implant is placed, a restoration is added to the top to complete the tooth. Here are a few options for dental restorations:

  • Dental Crown: The most common restoration, which covers a single-tooth implant.
  • Dental Bridge: A bridge spans gaps where multiple teeth are missing. It can be supported by one or two implants.
  • Implant Denture: For patients missing multiple teeth, implant-supported dentures provide a stable, removable option.

How It Feels

Although the thought of having a metal implant placed into your jawbone may sound uncomfortable, the procedure is typically much more comfortable than you might expect.

To ensure you don’t feel any pain during the surgery, we’ll numb the area with a mild anesthetic. Thanks to advanced dental technology, implants can be placed quickly, accurately, and with minimal invasiveness, which reduces discomfort and recovery time.

Many implant patients report feeling more bored or even sleepy during the short 30-minute procedure. The most discomfort you may experience is from holding your mouth open for a few minutes, but that’s the extent of it.

It’s normal to experience some mild swelling, discomfort, and possibly bruising within the first few hours following the procedure. However, this pain is very manageable, and we will provide you with specific instructions to minimize any discomfort once the anesthetic wears off. Most patients report that the implant site begins to feel better within a week.

Additionally, it’s reassuring to know that dental implants have a success rate of nearly 95%, making them one of the safest and most predictable procedures in dentistry.

What to Expect on Your Dental Implant Journey

Assessment

Your Dentist in Brantford will begin by assessing your suitability for implants. X-rays and a 3D scan of your jawbone will help determine the best course of action.

Inserting the Implant

After numbing the area, we will carefully place the titanium implant into your jawbone. In some cases, stitches may be necessary to close the gums.

Finalizing the Restoration

Once the implant heals, we will place a custom restoration (crown, bridge, or denture) to complete the process. Your new tooth will blend seamlessly with your natural smile.

  • The complexity of the procedure

Every case is unique, so we recommend scheduling a consultation to get an accurate estimate for your specific needs.

Are There Other Solutions for Missing Teeth?

While dental implants are the most durable and long-lasting solution for missing teeth, alternatives such as dental bridges and dentures may be better suited for certain patients. The right choice depends on factors like the condition of your remaining teeth, overall oral health, and personal preferences.

If you’re uncertain whether implants are the best option for you, schedule a consultation with our Dental Office in Brantford. We’ll review all available treatment options and help you choose the solution that’s right for restoring your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely no one has to know that your implants are not your natural teeth. While dental implants are made from metal screws, they are hidden beneath your gums and are covered with lifelike restorations that blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile. The result is a natural look that no one will be able to distinguish from your original teeth.

Dentures and implants serve different purposes and function in distinct ways. Dentures rest on top of your gums, applying pressure on the underlying bone tissue. In contrast, dental implants are placed beneath the gums and are fixed securely in the jawbone, helping to strengthen your bite. Both options have unique benefits and drawbacks. We recommend visiting us to discuss your options and find the best solution for your needs.

For patients who aren’t suitable candidates for dental implants, alternatives such as dental bridges and full or partial dentures may be viable options. The best way to determine which solution works for you is to schedule an appointment. We would be happy to discuss all your options and address any specific concerns you may have.

To be eligible for dental implants, you must be an adult in good general oral health. Your jawbone must also be strong enough to support the implant, and your gums must be healthy to minimize the risk of complications. If you’re unsure about your candidacy for implants, reach out to us. We’ll assess your situation and may offer alternative solutions for replacing your missing teeth.

If you’re feeling anxious, please let us know—your comfort is a top priority, and we’ll do everything we can to ensure a smooth experience.

In most cases, you can return to work the day after your dental implant surgery. After assessing your treatment plan, we can give you a more accurate time estimate. We’ll make sure to provide post-operative care instructions, so you know exactly what to expect and when to resume normal activities.

To ensure the longevity of your implants, we recommend routine checkups and cleanings every 6 months. Depending on your individual needs, we may suggest more frequent visits to monitor the health of your implants.

Care for your dental implants just as you would your natural teeth—brush and floss regularly, attend checkups, and let us know if you encounter any issues. Proper maintenance will keep your implants healthy and looking great for years to come.
